These two powerful terms totally resonate with me. “Fierce Accountability” and “Radical Responsibility” I just feel their meaning deeply because they highlight my values for being responsible in relationships to others in all areas of life.

I believe we need to embrace 5 principles and qualities of consciousness, compassion, curiousity, committment and courage to have the ability to create awesome relationships personally and professionally. I want to explore more deeply what it takes to actually action the principle of consciousness, how to develop this quality and make the changes you need to create positive relationships going forward. These steps are what will change your life towards a direction you want; towards more harmonious relationships, more professional success and ultimately a happier and more fulfilling life.

Thinking impacts how you feel and only you can change how you think by becoming more aware of what you are saying to yourself and how you are feeling. You can’t have a feeling without thinking something.

What does it mean to be fiercely accountable?  For me that starts with the simple idea that no sentence starts with ‘You did this, You did that….” which implies that someone else is responsible and can often sound like a criticism and as we know relationships of any sort, personal or professional do not thrive on criticism.

Fierce accountability means that you take responsibility for your own feelings and needs, and express them in a positive and collaborative way. Doesn’t mean that you aren’t emotional but it means that you don’t blame anyone and that you are acutely aware of what you need to express without criticism, contempt, defensiveness or withdrawing known as the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse by Dr. John Gottman. It means staying in the conversation until everyone feels heard and understood and there is resolution and understanding. It means “own your stuff”

The 5 Simple Steps to Successful Communication is all about Fierce Accountability or Radical Responsibility……..I just LOVE those expressions.

Managing to be fiercely accountable means you understand that you need to be clear with yourself first on how you are feeling, what you are thinking and what you need to happen going forward.
We know through science that what we think and the stories embedded in our minds affect our perspectives and how we feel. Then there are a few other underlying principles that one needs to be accomplished at to be a successful communicator.
One is being able to be in your own process of figuring out what you need. That means being able to wait until you understand what you are feeling and what you need.

We all have needs and values so learning what your needs are, is an important step to being more aware and conscious, which is essential if any of us are to create wonderful successful relationships. Sometimes for me I have to take time to process what I am feeling so I can sort out what I need and I would like to suggest that until you are clear you don’t even try to have any important conversation. One must have clarity and awareness of oneself to Create Successful Conversations.

To help you understand some of our needs I have listed our most basic human needs;

1) Physiological: hunger, thirst, bodily comforts etc

2) Safety/security: out of danger, emotionally and physically

3) Belongingness and Love: affiliated & connected with others, be accepted

4) Esteem: to achieve, be competent, gain approval and recognition

5) Cognitive: to know, to understand, and explore

6) Aesthetic: symmetry, order, and beauty

7) Self-actualization: to find self-fulfillment and realize one’s potential

8) Self-transcendence: to connect to something beyond the ego or to help others find self-fulfillment and realize they’re potential

These needs are huge drivers for our happiness and fulfillment and then beyond them are our individual personal needs such as respect, loyalty, honesty, authenticity, integrity, punctuality, cleanliness etc I think you get the idea.

Dr. Marshall Rosenberg author & creator of NVC-Non-Violent Communication says “conflicts between individuals or groups arise from miscommunication about their human needs, due to coercive or manipulative language that aims to induce fear, guilt, shame, etc. These modes of communication, when used during a conflict, divert the attention of the participants away from clarifying their needs, their feelings, their perceptions, and their requests, thus perpetuating the conflict”

This next statement to me is so profound, when you consider all the negative strategies we do use to get our needs met.

“NVC theory supposes all human behavior stems from attempts to meet universal human needs and that these needs are never in conflict. Rather, conflict arises when strategies for meeting needs clash. NVC proposes that if people can identify their needs, the needs of others, and the feelings that surround these needs, harmony can be achieved”

Let me share with you a wee simple story to explain what I mean. Some of you may even have experienced this yourself.

I have 4 wonderful adult sons, which means I have been through 4 teenage boys that all did sports and didn’t value or have a need for tidy rooms in the same way I did. Now some professionals would say “just close the door” and ultimately I know that is a good healthy option however I on the other hand need organization to feel relaxed and secure. So for awhile I was trying to do what the professionals tell you to do and failing miserably every time I would see their rooms I would get anxious and so not “zen” which was my responsibility to deal with, however sometimes one needs help and support to bring out ones Zen qualities.

I had to really figure out what was behind it for me and I learned a few things, I have a need for tidiness and organization and I value aesthetic beauty and symmetry. So once I was clear on that bit, I had to decide what my intention was before having the conversation, as I did not want to damage or strain my already fragile relationship with my teen. My intention was for my son to understand me and what was important to me in the HOPE that he might (if I was lucky) support me so I could feel more at peace. There was always the chance he might not think it important but I could at least try. Most people want to please others, as long as your request doesn’t compromise their needs or values. When presented with a well thought out request it is more than likely people will cooperate or at least negotiate with you for a compromise.

So here is what I said: 

1. INTENTION or HOPEI was hoping to help you understand how your room                     impacts me and that we have a conversation to come up with a solution that is a                   win-win for both of us.

2. STATING THE PROBLEM without criticism or judgment-When I see your room with clothes and sports gear on the floor

3. FEELINGS-I feel anxious, unsafe and unsettled

4. NEEDS & VALUES-because I have a need for order, cleanliness, tidiness and                    organization and value symmetry and beautiful surroundings

5. ASK-Would you be willing to clean up your room once a week and do laundry so your room is tidy and clean?

We have to be prepared for a no and not be attached to an outcome but the response I received was positive and showed me he understood what was important to me. He did collaborate with me to do his room and laundry once a week, which was my compromise as I would have unrealistically preferred it once a day LOL but the beauty of this is it shows how to create connection and cooperation rather than disconnection, discord and disharmony.

So I hope you can see the importance of understanding yourself so you can be clear on your feelings, needs and values so you can Create More Successful Conversations in your life. Here is an exercise to help you:

FIGURING IT ALL OUT
You are the primary caregiver of all of your own needs physically, emotionally & spiritually. If you find yourself triggered, feeling anxious & panicked it is important to take some time to reflect on the real causes of the upset so as to not damage your relationships. Here are some ideas to help you stay with your own process and not get into the judging and blame game with anyone.

Here are a few questions we all can ask ourselves in regards to the issue at hand:
1.What am I feeling? Check in with your body, what can you feel and check in with what you are thinking, what am I saying to myself this means. Is it about something else current or historical? Am I being triggered? Why might that be? What story are you telling yourself? Ask yourself what is true?

2. Given these feelings, what do I need or want? How can I take responsibility and care for this? If appropriate, what do I need from others? Be concrete & specific: compassion, listening, acknowledgement, reassurance, support etc……..

3. Through compassion and curiosity spend some time contemplating: What is the other person’s perspective? What might their feelings & needs based on what you know about them or by what they are expressing?

4. Ask yourself; is there anything that I need to take responsibility for regarding the issue at hand? Am I causing disconnection & suffering? What am I doing that is contributing to the problem?
Ie: self-defeating behaviour like using my anger, quitting, lying, being defensive, blaming, criticizing and using contempt to name a few. What do I need to validate & acknowledge the other person’s experience?

5. Ask yourself; What is my intention? How will I share this information? Considering tone, timing, and honestly asking yourself: Am I ready (am I still reactive)? Am I coming from a place of love and an open heart with the intention to achieve understanding and to create connection?

EINVENT, REDESIGN, RECREATE a NEW SELF and a NEW LIFE

Your Unconscious Mind is the part of your mind that runs your life in the background. It behaves much like a giant super computer and is programmed much like a computer. All your beliefs, thoughts and behaviors are a residual of the programs running in your unconscious mind. The self-image and beliefs we’ve been programmed with over the years control and run our lives. They get stored and become permanent structures in how we habitually think, believe, feel and act. In fact, according to neuroscientists we are 95% unconscious and 5% conscious. As a result, we mainly live our entire lives on autopilot.

Unfortunately, most of us have so many stored negative programs and hard-wired patterns that limit and sabotage our success. Many of our thoughts and beliefs even contradict one another, canceling out any potential benefits. What’s more, there are so many programs running our lives that it becomes difficult for new empowering programs to form and take root. We all know how difficult it can be to change a habit or an ingrained belief. Think of your unconscious mind as being like a computer. It stands ready, willing and able to carry out your every instruction. It is continuously scanning your thoughts, feelings, words and actions – all of which it interprets as commands that you have given it – and depending on which commands carry the most weight (the unconscious will always act on the dominant thoughts, words, feelings, actions (how strong the overriding feelings are will depend on your beliefs) The unconscious is like the faithful servant only serving the wishes of it’s master and since it treats you as the master of your thoughts, the master who carefully chooses wisely what they put their attention on…it has no choice but to act upon the instructions it has been given – even if those instructions are negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs and programs YOU DON’T WANT.
These programs define the limits of your success in all areas of your life.
We all have limiting beliefs, core tapes about our self worth, our brains are hard wired with negative beliefs that run our lives on a daily basis without us even being aware or conscious of them. Even people who we think ‘have it all’ can ultimately be deeply unhappy because of their low self-esteem and limited Mind Map. Putting Your Success on Autopilot Imprinting is the process of programming your Unconscious Mind with whatever goals, dreams or inspired outcomes you want. Once your Unconscious Mind is programmed, realizing your dreams can become effortless. In a MIND MAPPING session working together we will create a vision for your life that inspires you, lights you up and propels you forward in the direction you want to go in life. I will then personally lead you through the process of imprinting and reprogramming your Unconscious Mind by talking you into a deep relaxed state where your Conscious Mind relaxes and your Unconscious Mind (that’s your super computer) floats to the surface. Working together, we then IMPRINT your unconscious mind by directly giving it your desired outcomes and creating a new map for your mind to follow. The total session lasts for about 90 minutes. By directly imprinting it with your desired outcomes and goals of your choice your unconscious mind can then go to work directing and guiding you towards your end results. What is Mind Mapping? Mind Mapping or Imprinting is the process of programming your Unconscious Mind with whatever outcomes you want. Once your Unconscious Mind is programmed, realizing that outcome becomes effortless. Once you have imprinted your goals on your unconscious mind, you automatically begin thinking the kinds of thoughts that attract the exact opportunities to accomplish your goal easily. This is when achieving goals becomes effortless.

How do I use my MIND MAP?
Once you have your MP3 you can listen to it on any player you have (never listen to it while driving your car). Many people download it to their computer and you can then load your MIND MAP onto your mp3 player, iPod or IPhone or just play it from your computer’s media player. Make sure you are wearing headphones and press play. Make sure the recording is playing at a volume not too loud and not too soft, but just comfortable for you.
What preparation do I need to do prior to listening to my MIND MAP?
Firstly, become aware consciously of the goals that you want to create once more. Even though they’re on your blueprint already, it really sets things into motion and prepares both your conscious and unconscious mind to have a deeper experience. Have your Inspired Outcomes written on a sheet of paper or in a journal to remind you.
Secondly, make sure you will not be disturbed while you are listening to your MIND MAP. Turn off all phones (spouses and children)!
What is the best time of day to listen to it? I prefer listening in the morning, but any time of day will do. Mornings are good because you start your day on a high which can last all day. Also, I believe that you are less likely to fall asleep if you listen to your MIND MAP in the morning. I have used my MIND MAP during my lunch break as a great way to boost my energy for the afternoon. Find what works for you and make it a habitual part of your life.
I have more goals that I forgot to put into my MIND MAP, how do I include these? That’s great! I fully expect you to keep checking off your goals, just like a shopping list. Naturally, you will come up with new goals as you move further along your path. Just make sure that whatever goal you choose to create excites you, lights you up and turns you on. You can use the generic section in your MIND MAP where I invite you bring up onto the screen of your mind any new goals that you want to bring about. You can also use the bonus ‘Forest Meditation’ to insert one of your new inspired outcomes. Many people find that they ultimately outgrow their MIND MAP– in other words all of their goals have come about (often much faster than they expected).
If you want, you can then update and get a brand new blueprint.
What is the importance of relaxation? Relaxation allows your unconscious mind to float to the surface of your awareness, and your mind chatter to quiet down.
Research shows that this is the optimum state for imprinting the mind.
What do I do if I notice synchronicity related to my goal showing up in my life? Take INSPIRED ACTION immediately. Jump at those opportunities that are surrounded by meaningful coincidence. Trust your intuition and go for it! Anyone who has achieved success will tell you that they take lots of INSPIRED ACTION towards achieving their goals. Even the word ATTRACTION contains the word ACTION within it. If this were not the case, everybody would be rich and living their dream lives just by thinking it. If you are not taking ACTION towards achieving your dream life, NO amount of visualizing is going to get you there. The good news is that once you have used your MIND MAP to imprint your goals on your unconscious mind, you will be attracting the opportunities to take the inspired actions that move you towards your goals effortlessly. . What do the terms ‘Life’ or ‘The Universe’ refer to? The study of Quantum Physics has shown the existence of an energy field that holds all matter together. Everything in the universe is created from this energy. Some scientists are calling this force the Zero Point Field, the Quantum Hologram. I sometimes use the term ‘Life’ to represent this force because all of life is created from this force. There are many words for this force which some people call God, The Universe, Spirit, The Quantum Field, The Flow, The Force, Infinite Intelligence, and so on depending on each person’s belief system.
What if I fall asleep during listening to the recording? If you fall asleep while listening to your MIND MAP that’s OK. Your unconscious mind will still absorb your goals. Research shows, however, that best results come about when your mind is relaxed but alert and moving into a state of expanded awareness.
So, if you’re prone to falling asleep, it helps to sit up while listening.
You can also experiment with ‘acting out your goal’ while you are imagining it.
This way, there is no chance of you falling asleep! It is also a great way to convince your mind into believing that your imagined experience has actually happened.
What do I do if I miss a day? If you do miss out a day of listening to your MIND MAP, don’t panic. Just begin again the next day.

We will explore and grow awareness in personal relationships, learn more about your behavior, belief systems and find out how your communication process plays an important role in determining your health, your lifestyle and social experience.  Grow your inner understanding of how you process information, react and create the relationship behaviors you experience.  Learn language literacy and diplomacy and for some added inspiration and fun we will have one evening dedicated to True Colours Personality Typing. You won’t want to miss this evening for sure. We will also delve into the stories and meaning we make of what others say and do and how that impacts our perspectives and our feelings. We will learn to THINK RESPONSIBLY as it is important not to believe everything you think.

Be Benevolent by Rick Hanson

What are your intentions toward others?
The Practice

Be benevolent.

Why?
Benevolence is a fancy word that means something simple: good intentions toward living beings, including oneself.

This goodwill is present in warmth, friendliness, compassion, ordinary decency, fair play, kindness, altruism, generosity, and love. The benevolent heart leans toward others; it is not neutral or indifferent. Benevolence is the opposite of ill will, coldness, prejudice, cruelty, and aggression. We’ve all been benevolent, we all know what it’s like to wish someone well.

Benevolence is widely praised – from parents telling children to share their toys to saints preaching the Golden Rule – because it has so many benefits:

* Benevolence toward oneself is needed to fulfill our three fundamental needs: to avoid harms, approach rewards, and attach to others. When these needs are met, your brain shifts into its Responsive mode, in which the body repairs and refuels itself, you feel peaceful, happy, and loving.

* Benevolence toward others reduces quarrels, builds trust, and is the best-odds strategy to get good treatment in return.

* Benevolence within and between nations promotes the rule of law, educates children, feeds the hungry, supports human rights, offers humanitarian aid, and works for peace. Benevolence toward our planet tries to protect endangered species and reduce global warming.

Of course, this is just a partial list of benefits. Bottom-line, benevolence is good for individuals, relationships, nations, and the world as a whole.

The fact that benevolence is often enlightened self-interest makes it no less warm-hearted and virtuous. And at this time in history when individuals feel increasingly stressed and isolated, when relationships often stand on shaky ground, when international conflicts are fueled by dwindling resources and increasingly lethal weapons, and when humanity is dumping over nine billions tons of carbon each year into the atmosphere (like throwing 5 billion cars a year up into the sky, most of which stay there) – benevolence is not just moral, it’s essential.

But easier said than done.

How can we sustain benevolence in ourselves and in our relationships, nations, and world?

How?
* Know what benevolence feels like in your body, heart, and mind – Bring to mind a sense of warmth and good wishes toward someone. How does this feel? Try on other kinds of benevolence, and toward other beings, to sense what these are like as well.

* Realize that benevolence is natural and normal – In the media, we are so bombarded with words and images of anti-benevolence that you can start to think that ordinary decency and kindness are somehow exotic. But in fact, as we evolved, our ancestors stayed alive and passed on their genes by caring about themselves and others. And given the gratitude and reverence for nature commonly found in hunter-gatherer bands today, they likely also cared about the world upon which they depended.

* Take care of yourself – When your core needs are met – when you’re not stressed by threat, loss, or rejection – the brain defaults to its resting state, its home base. From this home base, most people are fair-minded, empathic, cooperative, compassionate, and kind: in a word, benevolent. While it’s possible to sustain goodwill in a state of fear, frustration, or loneliness, it is sure a lot harder. An undisturbed, healthy brain is a benevolent one.

* Take a stand for benevolence – Establish your intentions formally – perhaps at the start of the day, or during a contemplative practice, or at a meal – to wish yourself and all other beings well. In challenging situations, take care of your needs while also asking yourself, “How could I be benevolent here? How could I restrain any destructive thoughts, words, or deeds? Can I wish for the welfare of others? Can I express compassion and kindness?”

* Step out of your comfort zone – Not doing anything foolish, consider how you could stretch a bit (or more) in your good intentions toward others. For example, seeing people you don’t know, try wishing them well. Or with someone who’s irritating, try looking past the surface to sense this person’s own stress and worries; without waiving your rights, can you find more patience, can you let go of recrimination or payback? Or could you extend yourself with friends or family, maybe doing more dishes or giving someone a ride? In the larger world, consider volunteering some time or giving more to a charity.

* Last, appreciate some of the benevolence that buoys you along – We’ve all been nurtured and protected by friends and family, humanity altogether, and the biosphere. In some sense, there’s an exuberant benevolence in the physical universe itself; consider that most of the atoms in your body – any that are heavier than helium – were born inside an exploding star. Afloat in these gifts, who could not be benevolent?!
